The Best Outdoor Activities on Catalina Island

Kayaking: Abundant wildlife and calm waters make kayaking on Catalina Island an ideal activity for paddlers of all abilities. Beginners will find plenty to wonder at on a guided kayak trip to nearby Frog Rock, while experienced kayakers may want to set out for further destinations.

Snorkeling: Whether you rent gear and head for Lovers Cove or book a guided snorkel experience, the island is ideal for plunging beneath the surface and discovering the wonders underwater. Protected marine preserves allow fish, invertebrates and other marine life to flourish. You will probably want to include a wetsuit with your gear rental, but spending time snorkeling on Catalina is an experience you won’t regret.

Hiking: Santa Catalina features more than 165 miles of hiking trails, ranging from short strolls near Avalon to the epic Trans Catalina Trail. There’s nothing like getting out into the interior of the island, where stunning seascapes and breath-taking ocean views will inspire and captivate. If you are setting out, make sure to get a free hiking permit from the Catalina Island Conservancy, which can also provide trail maps.

Parasailing: Soaring high above Avalon via parasail is a surprisingly relaxing activity on Catalina Island. Provided everyone is older than 6, parasailing is an adventure the whole family will enjoy. If it’s warm, we love having the captain dip our toes in the sea.

The Beach: The beaches on Catalina Island offer something for everyone. A few of our favorites include South Beach, where you’ll find family activities in the summer like movies and bingo; Little Harbor, on the island’s remote windward side and Descanso Beach, just past the Catalina Casino in Avalon, where you’ll find a wealth of outdoor activities and a full bar.
