Trading the bustle of town for a saddle at Rancho Catalina offers a timeless connection to the island’s authentic heritage. It’s a chance to slow down and experience the “Old California” soul of Catalina Island at a rhythmic, peaceful pace that only a horse can provide.
As you ascend the legendary “Horse Trail,” the earthy scents of the canyon give way to a fresh Pacific breeze. The journey culminates in a breathtaking reveal of Avalon Harbor and the historic Casino—a grand, panoramic vista that feels entirely exclusive to those on the trail.
Our professional guides share the ranch’s story with a relaxed, local warmth. From the legacy of the Wrigley family to the equestrian traditions of the canyon, you’ll gain an insider’s perspective on the island’s history that feels like an easy conversation with a friend.
Above all, the experience is defined by the bond with your horse on a trail ride just for your small group. We take pride in pairing every guest with a trusted trail companion, ensuring that your exploration of these scenic ridgelines is both comfortable and deeply memorable.
Check-In: Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated and will result in a forfeited booking.
To ensure the safety of our guests and the welfare of our horses, the following policies are strictly enforced:
1. Do I need prior riding experience for the Bluff View Ride?
Not at all! This ride is specifically designed to be accessible for beginners. Our guides provide a safety orientation and will be with you every step of the way to ensure a comfortable experience.
2. Why do you require a weigh-in at check-in?
At Rancho Catalina, horse welfare is our top priority. We use a height-to-weight ratio chart to ensure that the rider’s weight is appropriate for the horse’s size and strength, preventing injury and ensuring a pleasant ride for both of you.
3. Will we see bison on this tour?
No. Our rides explore the scenic trails and ridgelines surrounding Avalon. While Catalina Island is famous for its bison, they roam the deeper interior of the island. For the safety of our guests and horses, our tours do not enter bison territory.
4. Where exactly is Rancho Catalina located?
We are located at 602 Avalon Canyon Rd, Avalon, CA 90704. It is a scenic 20-25 minute walk from the ferry terminal or a quick taxi/trolley ride from downtown Avalon.
5. Can two people ride on one horse (double-riding)?
For safety reasons, we do not allow double-riding. Every guest, including children aged 9 and up, must ride their own individual horse.
