• 30 Mins Prior: Arrive at 602 Avalon Canyon Rd for mandatory weigh-ins and safety waivers.
• Safety Briefing: Receive a professional helmet fitting and basic riding orientation.
• Mount Up: Staff-assisted mounting on your assigned trail horse.
• The Ride: Ascend the historic “Horse Trail” into the rugged island interior.
• The Overlook: Reach the bluff for panoramic views of Avalon Harbor and the Pacific.
• The Descent: Wind back down the trail—watch for local mule deer or island foxes!
• Return to Rancho: Assisted dismount at the stables and a final photo op.

To ensure the safety of our guests and the welfare of our horses, the following policies are strictly enforced:

• Age Requirement: All riders must be at least 9 years old.
• Weight Policy: We strictly follow a height-to-weight ratio chart. Mandatory weigh-ins are conducted for all guests at check-in to ensure horse welfare. Please see the ratio chart below.
• Physical Condition: Riders must be in good health and able to mount and dismount the horse with minimal assistance.

Please make sure to bring or wear the following:

• Closed-toe shoes
• Long pants
• Sunscreen and/or sunglasses

Remember to charge & bring your phone so you can capture pics of the amazing views! Bonus points if you have a strap to keep your device from dropping. We love when people wear their cowboy hats – please bring a strapped hat so that you can wear it around your neck while you have your helmet on.

Not at all! This ride is specifically designed to be accessible for beginners. Our guides provide a safety orientation and will be with you every step of the way to ensure a comfortable experience.

At Rancho Catalina, horse welfare is our top priority. We use a height-to-weight ratio chart to ensure that the rider’s weight is appropriate for the horse’s size and strength, preventing injury and ensuring a pleasant ride for both of you.

No. Our rides explore the scenic trails and ridgelines surrounding Avalon. While Catalina Island is famous for its bison, they roam the deeper interior of the island. For the safety of our guests and horses, our tours do not enter bison territory.

We are located at 602 Avalon Canyon Rd, Avalon, CA 90704. It is a scenic 20-25 minute walk from the ferry terminal or a quick taxi/trolley ride from downtown Avalon.

For safety reasons, we do not allow double-riding. Every guest, including children aged 9 and up, must ride their own individual horse.
